Originally, a professional enhancement year was not on the cards for me. However, after communicating with my careers mentor, I was soon advised that gathering industry experience would be massively beneficial to me.
This led me to start applying for internship and development schemes online, which I found using job seekers websites. Firstly, I applied for a series of creative and production based internships in London. However, due to my lack of experience combined with the fact that these placements were for big production companies, I found it difficult to secure myself work. Although disheartening, this encouraged me to contact a series of smaller production companies, closer to home. After sending out a series of speculative emails, the following placements were arranged:
- True North, Leeds (two weeks)
- North One, Birmingham (one week)
- IPM, Leeds (6 months)
After securing these, I later saw a scheme titled 'Beyond Brontes' advertised,
which aims to assist young aspiring media professionals in gaining entry into the industry. Due to my placement at IPM only being part time, I decided that I could still apply for this bespoke programme, as it was intended to mainly run on evenings or weekends.
After a gruelling application and interview process, I was accepted onto the scheme and therefore part of the first ever Beyond Brontes cohort.
-Beyond Brontes (September - July)
Securing a placement involved a lot of research, contacting people, meetings and determination. However, I feel like the whole process has massively benefitted me as it has prepared me for the what the process of looking for a more permanent job role might entail.
